Why Platinum? Why not????
May 23, 2011 By Elizabeth No CommentsRight now, white metal looks are all the rage. Your girlfriend/fiancé/wife wants Platinum, but sticker shock sets in and you’re questioning why it’s worth it…
One of the most important qualities of Platinum is that it is hypoallergenic and resists tarnish. Not many metals can boast that quality! Platinum is one of the most pure metals that you can work with and wear safely. It’s 95% pure (iridium and ruthenium are the most common alloys to mix in).
Platinum is strong and highly durable – two great mechanical properties for jewelry! When you dent, ding or scratch a platinum ring, it simply displaces throughout the ring – if you do that with white gold, you actually have lost gold in that ring. Platinum is so much heavier – in fact it’s 60% heavier than 14 karat white gold!!
In my opinion, one of the best attributes of platinum is that it is a true white color. All white gold starts out as yellow gold, so over time it’ll take on a yellow hue to the ring (that all has to do with your body chemistry and make up – there is no way to predetermine how fast or slow this process will start). Platinum will always remain white. With that being said, that is where the price will come in to play. With Platinum, you pretty much pay for everything upfront – very little maintenance will go into it. With white gold, you will be consistently maintaining, whether it’s turning the white gold back to white, replacing and re-tipping prongs, or adding more metal to the bottom of the ring (the shank) because it has worn down and away.
When she suggests Platinum, just remember, she deserves only the best!
