Jewelry appraisals are primarily done for insurance purposes; it’s when we value your jewelry and provide a written document to provide to your insurance company with a retail replacement cost. The other purpose for a formal appraisal is to determine fair market value for estate or legal purposes. This value is a current liquidation value or what you could expect to get selling it in the open market.

At Colonial Jewelers, we have two in-house Graduate Gemologists to appraise your jewelry: Sarah, our President and Owner, and Jeff, her father and predecessor. However, Jeff does most of the appraisals, and takes great pride in doing so.
Appraisals for previous Colonial purchases and non-Colonial Jewelers purchases take approximately two to three weeks to complete, and the cost varies based on the size and complexity of the item(s). Our expert sales associate will be able to give you a more definitive timeframe as well as an estimate for the jewelry appraisal fee when you drop your item(s) off to us.
We will need to see all items in person before we can accurately answer any questions you might have, or provide an estimate. You will have to drop your items off and we will hold them, but don’t worry, they will be treated with care and stored in our safe. All appraisals are done entirely in-house, so your item(s) will never leave our store.
