JEWELRY CARE

Learn to care for the jewelry that means the most to you. With in-house jewelry repair experts, Graduated Gemologists and fourth-generation and family-owned values and experience, our team at Colonial Jewelers in Downtown Frederick, Maryland is the ideal jewelry destination for the greater D.C. and Baltimore area.

We can clean and check your jewelry regularly for free, and give you tips on how to care for it in between.

Storing your Jewelry

Most people store their jewelry in a jewelry box or drawer. It is best to keep items separated so they do not scratch each other, and to keep chains hanging so they do not become tangled.

Some people prefer to store their jewelry in a safe when it’s not being worn because of its high value or rarity.

If you happen to have individual gemstones, a soft pouch is ideal for keeping them from coming in contact with hard surfaces.

For silver, specifically, you’ll want a cool, dry place, preferably in a soft piece of felt or cloth.

Cleaning your Jewelry

We offer our own line of jewelry cleaning products that we know are safe to use on most non-porous jewelry. Our collection includes jewelry bath, foaming cleaner, travel cleaning pens and jewelry cloth and are all available for purchase in store.

Be cautious when using home ultrasonic cleaners, as only certain gemstones can handle the ultrasonic vibrations.

Diamond cleaners usually contain ammonia and water.

You can use a soft brush to remove dust or dirt from the setting of your ring.

Silver jewelry can be cleaned with a silver polishing cloth, with or without silver cleaning solution.

You can also always come into Colonial Jewelers to have your jewelry professionally cleaned for no charge, while you wait, and we’ll have it looking shiny and new!

Maintaining Brilliance

Jewelry worn every day, like engagement rings and wedding bands, can lose their brilliance if not cleaned regularly. Everyday habits and products can dull their shine—lotions leave a film on diamonds, reducing their sparkle.

Avoid wearing diamond jewelry in chlorinated pools, hot tubs, or while doing rough work, as these can damage the metal and loosen settings. Fingerprints and smudges can also diminish a diamond’s luster and fire over time.

Fortunately, professional cleaning can easily restore your jewelry’s beauty and keep it looking as radiant as the day you received it.
