Repair Take-In: What To Expect

By: Susan Summers

If you’re a jewelry owner, you’re more than likely going to need repair services at one point or another. In our recent post, we talk about best practices for jewelry care. Today we will discuss the repair in-take process as well as what's involved in more intricate repairs whether it’s for an heirloom piece, or if it’s a piece that’s been significantly damaged.

The In-take Process

Bring your pieces in for inspection by one of our sales associates. We are unable to evaluate any pieces over the phone or via photos due to the intricate nature of jewelry; a thorough in-person inspection is necessary to provide an accurate quote. The associate will complete an evaluation of the condition and talk you through the repair process and pricing. In the event of severe damage, or if the piece is an heirloom piece that’s been well-loved, the associate will elect to take in your piece for an estimate from the master jeweler.

The Estimate Process

Sometimes it takes a more thorough analysis from the master jeweler in order to determine the process required to repair your jewelry. This process typically takes a couple of days. When the estimate is completed, the associate will call you to review the estimate, and you may ask any questions that you may have. Once approved, the repair will begin!

Insurance Claims

There are occasions when it is more economical to pursue your insurance for repairs, especially if they are likely to be extensive. While this is not an option you would want to use consistently, it is an avenue to have the repair covered. All repairs that have the possibility of an insurance claim will go through the estimate process with the master jeweler. Once you make your insurance claim, you will provide us with the agency and claim number, and we will take it from there!

What is a Complete Refinish?

A Complete Refinish is a comprehensive repair service that positively impacts the structure and beauty of a piece. This is a service that is sometimes recommended for family heirloom pieces, especially rings, that naturally take a great deal of wear and tear. One way that we like to describe this service is that your piece will be refurbished for its “next life,” meaning that however much it was loved and cherished over the years, it will be ready to wear for many more years to come.

At Colonial Jewelers, we take great pride in caring for your special pieces of jewelry. Beyond the peace of mind that your jewelry doesn’t leave our showroom for its repair, our service department is able to work together more cohesively and efficiently to order any parts and to complete the repair work. Our in house master jeweler has decades of experience and is ready to make your jewelry shine once more!
