We love creating custom jewelry intended to be as unique as the person who will wear it. Whether you're designing your dream engagement ring from scratch or giving your old jewelry new life, our team can help you create a beautiful custom design.
Let's work together to bring your vision to life with a custom piece designed to your exact specifications. Using computer-aided design (CAD) technology, we can show you what your piece will look like, make suggestions, and adapt every detail until it's perfect-- all in three dimensions.
Step 1: Start with your ideas and any inspiration you might have. We can work from a sketch, picture or description. If you need help coming up with ideas, we can brainstorm with you! If you have a specific idea in mind, the more descriptions and visuals you have, the better.
Step 2: Once the design is finalized, the replica will be created out of wax. This is when our in-house CAD jewelry designer will use exact dimensions to create a mock-up on the computer, and model it in the 3D printer. This step takes about 2-3 weeks, and once it's ready we'll give you a call so you can come see it and approve it!
Step 3: Once the wax mold is reviewed and approved by you, the piece will be cast in metal and our in-house master jeweler will then create the actual piece. He will hand-set your stones and polish it to perfection; your design will be brought to life to be treasured for a lifetime.
We would love to see you in person at our showroom in Downtown Frederick, Maryland, where our team of expert sales associates can walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have, and brainstorm design ideas that fit with your inspiration, style and budget. However, if you'd like to start online, you can follow the steps below.
Chris Robey, Sarah's husband, is our CAD Jewelry Designer. He started here at Colonial Jewelers over ten years ago as a bench jeweler and helped support Sarah as she was taking steps to become the fourth-generation owner of the store.
When talks about starting an in-house custom design department began- Chris was the natural choice to develop this for Colonial Jewelers because of his background in both fine art and goldsmithing. Chris went to Stuller Headquarters twice for two different CAD courses. He now takes the lead on creating the digital mock-up of every custom piece, and 3D printing it into a mold for your approval.
Chris' role in the custom design process requires him to communicate directly with the sales associates about what their customer wants, and talk through design alternatives when necessary, and explain why those alternatives are necessary. He is a perfectionist with extreme attention to detail, and will ensure that we approach your custom design project the best way possible.
Once you approve your mold, Chris hands the job off to our in-house Master Jeweler, Keith. As a fellow perfectionist, your piece will also be in good hands with Keith.
Keith has also been with Colonial for years, expanding his knowledge and skills and working his way up from a jeweler. Colonial Jewelers also invested in his jewelry skills and education by sending him to the New Approach School for two advanced stone setting courses.
Keith will bring your custom project to life by hand-setting your stones and polishing the final product to perfection. Once he's done, and after he and Chris have taken the proper amount of time to admire their work together, Chris then puts on his in-house photographer hat and takes our beautiful, high-quality Custom by Colonial images of some of his favorite pieces.
