What is Mokume?
October 5, 2011 By Elizabeth 1 CommentMokume, which translates into “wood eye metal”, was developed by Japanese craftsmen for the adornment of samurai swords.
Most mokume bands are available in 4-8 millimeter widths and sizes 3-18 (whole, half and quarter sizes). Bands can be made in full mokume (which can be very pricy), and with a liner (as shown below). Liners are available in titanium and black zirconium – although styles will vary and it’s important to check the availability first!
Mokume is made by the bonding of metals by twisting and compressing them together and then setting them in a groove. You can even set stones in the mokume design!
Mokume rings, like other alternative metals, cannot be sized but can be exchanged for different sizes, for a small fee, in the event of fluctuation in the finger size.
