How Diamonds are made
June 21, 2011 By Julie No CommentsHey welcome back! You ready to learn how a diamond is made? Okay, here we go! Far, far away beneath the earth’s surface (about 90-120 miles below!) in the upper mantle crust lies a mineral made of just one element named carbon. At this earth’ layer, the carbon element is exposed to EXTREME heat and pressure. As a result of EXACT temperature and pressure, a crystal structure is formed out of the carbon element, which creates the diamond. The diamond reaches the earth’s surface by being thrusted upward through a series of violent eruptions over billions of years. This geological eruption breaks through the earth’s surface depositing diamonds. Isn’t that fantastic?!! Next month, we’ll talk about the 1st diamond discovery! Stay tuned…..
