Rubies.. The Science behind the Beauty
June 29, 2011 By Lorraine No CommentsRubies are one of the most desired gemstones of the world. They are part of the corundum family. Rubies are ALWAYS red; any other color of corundum is considered to be a sapphire. Their red hue is due to the presence of chromium within the crystal structure. The most pure, vivid reds demand the highest prices. Rubies have the potential for a variation called asterism, which is also known as a “star.” These can be 3 or 6 point lighter colored stars within the stone that move with the viewer. Star rubies are cut into a cabochon shape with a smooth, domed top that displays the brilliance and movement of the glowing design within. Rubies can be cut into nearly any shape to suit a designers needs or a consumers wants. When investing in a gemstone, the purchaser should always go with the stone that appeals to them the most especially in color.
