Peridot, the beautiful August birthstone
August 5, 2011 By Lorraine 1 CommentPeridot has become a staple in the jewelry industry thanks to having been named August’s birthstone. It is one of the only precious stones that occurs in one color; green. This vibrant green hue specifically shown by peridot is due to the iron content within the crystal structure. The more iron present, the brighter the green. Gem quality peridot is fairly abundant in the spectrum of gems, but rare considering how much exists in relation to its original rock, olivine. Olivine and peridot are essentially the same mineral with peridot displaying desirable color and clarity. The crystal structure also allows for an assortment of shapes to be fashioned, even cabochon. Peridot’s color and glassy finish make it a favorite stone for brighter jewelry pieces and with a Moh’s hardness around 7, this gem is rated relatively safe for the careful owner.
