Kunzite: A “Sensitive” Gem
September 2, 2011 By Lorraine No CommentsKunzite is considered to be a “new” gem since its discovery just over a hundred years ago. It was named after George Frederick Kunz, the man responsible for documenting and describing its qualities. Kunzite is mostly a faint, delicate pink color with hints of violet. It is pleochroic, meaning that depending on the angle viewed and how much care the cutter took, the gem can show different colors, or no color at all. Kunzite is prized for its feminine color which also needs to be protected. This gem’s color literally fades in direct sunlight, so responsible owners are a must, so that the beautiful hues are not lost. It rates about a 6.5-7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale so it is deemed “ok” for the responsible owner.
