De Beers Diamond Company
September 2, 2011 By Julie No CommentsI am pretty sure you have heard of De Beers, right?! Well, that is the company that Rhodes established around 1888! An interesting bit of trivia about Rhodes, when he died in 1902, he left most of his fortune to his alma-mater, Oxford University creating the scholarship named after him, the prestigious Rhodes scholarship!
De Beers and its diamond supply in Africa was for all intents and purposes the main supplier of diamonds in the world up until the 1990’s. By the 1990’s, their place in the industry was being challenged by other areas of the world, like Russia, Australia and Canada. Next month we’ll talk about the different types of deposits where diamonds are found………….there are 4 of them….any guesses?
