Diamonds are Discovered!
June 29, 2011 By Julie No CommentsSome records show India produced and traded uncut rough diamonds as early as the fourth century BC. Diamonds were found in the rivers and streams. By the mid-1300s diamonds were cut into shapes. Up until this point diamonds were left rough and uncut because it was thought that diamonds were too sacred to alter. By 1380, Europe had its first cut and polished diamond. It wasn’t until the late 1400’s that diamonds became more mainstream and fashionable throughout Europe because a faster travel sea route between India and Europe was discovered. By the 1700’s India’s diamond supply dwindled and Brazil became the number one resource for diamonds. Diamonds were discovered in Brazil by gold miners sifting through the Amazon River. Can you think of the next country where large diamond deposits were discovered? I’ll give you the answer next month……….oh, the suspense!
